Makerere University has highlighted the research achievements of doctoral graduands from Makerere University Business School (MUBS) as part of the university's 72nd Graduation Ceremony held in May 2022.
The 72nd Graduation Ceremony took place from 23 to 27 May 2022, with MUBS holding its graduation session on Thursday, 26 May 2022. The ceremony celebrated graduands from across Makerere University and its colleges, with the university reporting a total of 100 PhD graduands.
The MUBS Doctoral Citations showcase some of the research undertaken by the school's PhD graduands, highlighting studies addressing health, entrepreneurship, employment and other challenges affecting society.
Research on Lead Exposure, Malaria and Anaemia
One of the doctoral studies highlighted was conducted by MUKISA K. Ambrose, whose research examined the Role of blood lead on the anemia status of malaria infected children.
The study investigated the effects of simultaneous exposure to lead pollution and malaria infection on anaemia among children in urban Uganda.
According to the research findings, exposure to blood lead alongside malaria infection was associated with increased severity of anaemia. The study also identified blood lead levels as an important factor to consider when examining anaemia, particularly among children affected by malaria.
The research recommended further studies into other factors that may contribute to anaemia in order to better understand how different conditions interact over time.
The study was funded by DAAD and supervised by Dr Joseph Kyambadde and Dr Denis M. Kasozi.
Research on Youth Self-Employment in Uganda
Another doctoral citation featured KUSEMERERWA Christopher, whose research focused on Self-employment among the Youth in Uganda.
The study examined young people who had completed university and tertiary education, seeking to understand factors that influence their participation and success in self-employment.
Using a multi-theoretical approach, the research found that social capital, learning behaviour, initiative conduct and business self-efficacy were important factors in youth self-employment.
The research further established that business self-efficacy partially mediates the relationship between social capital, learning behaviour and initiative conduct in self-employment among young people.
The study recommended that young people demonstrate greater initiative in identifying and pursuing business opportunities rather than waiting for opportunities to come to them.
It also called for changes in education and training approaches to strengthen practical learning and better prepare young people for employment and entrepreneurship.
From a policy perspective, the research recommended fiscal measures targeting young people to help strengthen their confidence and ability to engage in business.
The study was funded by Makerere University and supervised by Prof. John C. Munene, Prof. Waswa Balunywa and Prof. Laura Orobia.
MUBS Research Contributing to Society
The doctoral citations demonstrate the breadth of research undertaken by MUBS scholars, with studies addressing both business and wider societal challenges.
While one study focused on youth entrepreneurship and self-employment, another examined a public health challenge affecting children. Together, the studies demonstrate how doctoral research at MUBS contributes evidence that can inform policy, education, entrepreneurship and social development.
Makerere University described its 72nd doctoral citations as a collection of key findings from research projects undertaken by PhD graduands, noting that the studies addressed ongoing problems and unresolved issues through analysis, evidence and proposed solutions.
The university's 72nd Graduation therefore served not only as a celebration of academic achievement but also as an opportunity to showcase research with potential implications for Uganda and beyond.
Celebrating MUBS Doctoral Graduands
The 72nd Graduation marked an important milestone for the doctoral graduands whose years of research culminated in the conferment of their PhD degrees.
Their work reflects the role of postgraduate research in generating knowledge and examining some of the complex challenges facing communities, institutions and the economy.
Makerere University congratulated the doctoral graduands and encouraged them to continue contributing to research and knowledge development as members of the university's alumni community.
