As the 2026/2027 academic year gets underway at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), aspiring Chief Fresher Kyalimpa Joshua is positioning his leadership bid around a message that goes beyond campaign promises: leadership should be demonstrated through service.
A Bachelor of Commerce student, Joshua's leadership journey began long before he arrived at MUBS.
He served as a Time Keeper and Headboy at St. Lawrence Primary School, Kyengera, before continuing his leadership journey at London College of St. Lawrence, Maya, where he served as Deputy Head boy and later became Head Prefect in 2024.
He also served as President of the Interact Club of London College, Maya, adding community engagement to his leadership experience.
Turning Experience Into Service
Joshua's leadership experience has also extended beyond school.
He currently serves as Managing Director of CREATE HOPE FOUNDATION, an organisation involved in charity work and supporting less-privileged people, including students in need of scholastic materials.
Alongside his community work, Joshua is an entrepreneur and currently manages Trinity Furniture Store in Kiwatule while pursuing his Bachelor of Commerce at MUBS.
From Promises to Action at MUBS
At MUBS, Joshua has begun putting his service-oriented approach into practice.
He has established a student information desk aimed at helping students, particularly freshers, navigate some of the practical challenges that come with starting university.
Through the initiative, he has helped students with medical registration, generating PRNs, setting up Microsoft Teams and creating student email accounts.
The timing comes as MUBS welcomes a new generation of students. The School's official 2026/2027 orientation programme began in early August, while lectures commenced on August 10.
MUBS also reported welcoming more than 12,000+ freshmen and women during the 2026 orientation week, with students being introduced to academic regulations, ICT services, health services, student support and other essential university information.
That environment makes access to practical information especially important for students still finding their way around university systems.
For Joshua, the information desk provides an opportunity to engage directly with students and respond to some of their immediate needs.
A Leadership Record That Started Early
Joshua's profile combines student leadership, community service and entrepreneurship.
From primary school leadership to becoming a head prefect, leading an Interact Club, supporting charitable initiatives and running a business, his experiences have continued to expose him to different forms of responsibility.
Outside leadership and business, Joshua says he enjoys making friends, watching movies and reading books.
As the MUBS Chief Fresher race develops, his record gives students another factor to consider beyond campaign messages: the experience and service an aspiring leader brings before taking office.
For Joshua, the argument is straightforward leadership should not begin after winning an election. It should begin with service.
Whether that approach will earn him the confidence of MUBS, freshers will ultimately be decided by the students.
For now, his information desk is providing a practical demonstration of the leadership style he is presenting to the MUBS community.
