Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has commissioned a new three-storey, 2,000-seater classroom block in a major infrastructure development aimed at expanding teaching and learning space for the institution’s growing student population.
The facility was commissioned by the Acting Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Dr. J.C. Muyingo, during a ceremony attended by members of the MUBS community and other stakeholders.
The new classroom block is expected to provide much-needed additional space for face-to-face learning as MUBS continues to serve a student population of more than 30,000.
New facility to ease pressure on learning spaces
The development comes at a time when MUBS continues to expand its academic programmes and strengthen its learning environment.
According to MUBS Principal Prof. Moses Muhwezi, the institution’s growing student population has increased demand for adequate teaching and learning facilities.
He noted that the new block will enable more students to access face-to-face learning while creating greater opportunities for interaction and collaboration between students and lecturers.
The facility is therefore expected to ease pressure on existing classroom spaces and contribute to a more conducive academic environment.
MUBS’ current academic arrangements include both on-campus and online learning, with students alternating between face-to-face and online lectures depending on their programmes and schedules.
Government support for education infrastructure
Speaking at the commissioning, Hon. Dr. Muyingo emphasised the importance of ensuring that investments in education infrastructure translate into improved learning outcomes and meaningful opportunities for young people.
The Minister highlighted the need for institutions to go beyond physical infrastructure by using improved facilities to promote quality education, innovation, relevant skills development and job creation.
His message aligns with the broader national emphasis on competency-based education and equipping learners with practical skills relevant to Uganda’s development needs. Dr. Muyingo has previously stressed the importance of linking education to innovation, skills development and employment.
MUBS targets skills, innovation and employability
Prof. Muhwezi also highlighted the School’s broader efforts to strengthen the quality and relevance of education at MUBS.
These efforts include continued investment in staff development, competency-based education, research, innovation and community engagement.
The Principal said such initiatives are intended to ensure that MUBS graduates leave the institution equipped with relevant skills and competencies needed to navigate the world of work and contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
MUBS currently describes itself as a leading provider of business and management education, with a focus on professional development, entrepreneurship, leadership, research and innovation.
A milestone in MUBS’ infrastructure development
The commissioning of the classroom block represents another step in MUBS’ efforts to strengthen its physical infrastructure in response to institutional growth.
The School has continued to invest in systems and facilities that support teaching, learning and student services. Its current academic infrastructure strategy is particularly significant as the institution manages a large and growing student population while maintaining blended learning options.
